All the teachings addressed in Matthew’s Gospel offer significant insights to guiding humanity. Rob mentions in his argument one of the Beatitudes – “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth”(5:5). However, Rob continues to expand upon this teaching to encompass the poor as well, focusing on the materialism of this world. I personally understand this teaching to be read in a more simplified manner. Synonyms for the word meek include humble, docile, and gentle. So in actuality, the teaching is focusing on those of a quieter and more timid demeanor, and not so much in impoverished.
In today’s society, the emphasis on strength is very prominent. More specifically in Western cultures, we are taught to be able to work independently, not to depend on others to meet your ends, and to restrain from obvious emotions. Any perceived weakness is often exploited, and therefore what may be considered weakness is often hidden – whether it be strong emotions or a lack of expertise in a certain subject area. And yet this definition and emphasis on strength is not what Jesus focuses on in his sermon. Rather, those that go about life in a soft, gentle manner will receive the blessings of heaven.
Materialism is spoken out against in one particular teaching. “Do lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal” (6:20). However, I believe this Beatitude focuses more on the meek, rather than the impoverished.
