In Joel’s post, he said that the most important and ignored teaching was, “Love thy enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” He stated that “you should not show hate to anyone even if they show hate towards you.” I believe this is one of the most important teachings, however it is not ignored. In today’s world, we are all taught that even if someone is being cruel to you, you should always be nice back, and to always be the bigger person. The golden rule in my kindergarten class was “treat others the way you would want to be treated.” This teaching is not ignored in today’s society. Movies and books are based upon this teaching, and many lessons in the early years of school are also based upon this teaching. Don’t get me wrong, people ignore this lesson in today’s world. However, I believe that the lengths people take in teaching this lesson make it one of the least neglected teachings. When I encounter someone who has not been nice to me, I of course don’t want to be nice back, but something triggers in the back of my mind to be the most overly nice person I could be. I want to show them that I am the bigger person no matter how awful they could be to me. The fact that we are distinctly nicer to our enemies shows how much this lesson has been ingrained into our minds, and how widely it is taught.
