Response to Pluck

I think that Jackie’s response was not at all wrong, but I couldn’t consider it to be the most important or neglected. I think people tend to overlook the big picture, instead of the details, and forget the main purpose in life. They get caught up in little things – focus on the insignificant – when they should be concentrating on improving the whole. Also, I think that relaxing and finding a solution to a major problem is more effective than removing slight issues. That said, most people do the wrong thing: not by neglecting overlooked “hand” or “eye,” but by forgetting about the body as a whole. That would make it not only the least neglected, but also show that the opposite action is most important. As with Jackie’s friend, it wasn’t the little things that needed to be stopped, it was bigger than that: it was actually the relationship with the friend. While removing yourself from a bad environment, distancing from a bad friend, or avoiding a vice are all good things, I don’t believe that the way to go about that is to prune just one aspect of the problem. Furthermore, I don’t think that was what Jesus was trying to say. I believe that he wasn’t talking about getting rid of the little things that bring us down, but the actual whole that can bring us damnation. Instead of letting a sin go without reconciliation, we should fix our problems and work to become better people - in that effect: taking away the hand or eye that sins before you allow your entirety to go to hell.
