Don't Worry, Be Happy

Among the many teachings in Matthew 5-7, the most important and most ignored teaching is “…do not be anxious about your life” (25). This teaching is not just telling us to not be anxious and worry so much, it goes deeper than that. It is telling us to have faith and put our trust in God, because he will take care of us. It tells us there is no reason to worry; it won’t do us any good: “And which of you by being anxious can add on cubit to his span of life?” (27). This is saying that we shouldn’t worry our lives away; we should be enjoying the gift of life that God gave us, not agonizing over its details.
This teaching is definitely one of the most ignored in today’s world. People are always worried about their futures and their pasts but hardly ever enjoy the moment they are in. Money is one of the biggest anxieties people have but like that old saying goes “You can’t take it with you”, so we shouldn’t worry that much over it. I have personal experience with the subject of this teaching because I have high anxiety. I constantly agonize over details from my past and panic about what the future holds. This is an extremely unhealthy way to live, and it isn’t fun. But I’m learning to “Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day” (34).
