PLATO
After reading the first ten pages of Plato’s written work, one of the most important thing that’ Plato cares about he is maintaining piety. All during the two characters discussion, they mention divinity and what is right by the gods standards. Everything that they have been talking about relates back to what is religiously correct. The whole reason that Socrates is being brought to court is because someone is accusing him of being the maker of the gods, “he asserts that I am a maker of gods and on this account that I make novel gods and don’t believe in the ancient ones.” The fact that anyone would sue someone else for this would in present times sound absurd. However, back then it must have been very important that everyone believe in the “right” gods. No one can go against what the whole society thinks are the correct gods. They do discuss whether or not they should bring various people to court. However, they make the decision as to whether or not it would be just to bring them to court according to their religion. Socrates also mentions the god Zeus in his conversation with Euthyphro. It is obvious that the environment and culture that Plato lives in is heavily influenced by their religion and that it is very important in their society that people obey the gods and worship them. It seems as if Plato’s religion is subtly woven into this story.
