Fighting Rob
In his argument, Rob Lavoie says that the most important yet neglected teaching from the Sermon on the Mount is “blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” While I understand his argument, I cannot agree with it because I do not believe that the lesson is all that important. It seems that the sermon means to teach humility. Yet elsewhere in the Bible, God says outright that it is a human’s job to be humble. Because of this, I do not feel that this is a very important lesson from the Sermon on the Mount. On top of its lack of importance, I believe that most people tend to lead humble lives. I know that when I personally act egotistical, it is meant in a joking manner. I know in my core that I have little to be egotistical about, therefore I find that I automatically live under humility. Also, I find that the people around me typically have a similar demeanor. As a culture, it is few and far between that such egotists exist. During our discussion of The Epic of Gilgamesh we talked about the authors warning against egotism. Because of the ancient warnings, I believe that there is much more humility in the world. Some people may claim that there are still egotists and I would agree. However, I believe that egotists are no longer accepted as a part of life. Instead, people stand up to the egotists and they never last long. The last major person with little to no humility was Bill Clinton. His ego went too far and he was put back in place as part of the natural progression of our society.
